Why is Trump questioning Ilhan Omar’s name?

What the report says
U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar to resign after a Justice Department court filing used a different name for her. The filing, submitted in connection with an ongoing legal matter involving sealed records, referred to the Minnesota congresswoman as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” Al Jazeera reported that the document did not say Omar had committed fraud or explain the relationship between the names.
The controversy comes alongside a federal investigation into Omar’s immigration history and a search of her Washington, DC, home on October 12, which was carried out under a judicially authorised warrant. Omar has denied wrongdoing and described the search as political intimidation. She also said she planned to move out of the home because of safety concerns.
After the name reference became public, Trump revived allegations of identity fraud and used the filing as a basis to demand her resignation. Omar responded that her name has always been Ilhan Omar and said Trump was promoting conspiracy theories. Her office issued a similar denial, saying any claim that her name is something else is false.
The dispute has broader political significance because it reflects a wider pattern of attacks on Muslim American politicians, including scrutiny over names, identity and faith. Al Jazeera noted that Omar and other candidates have faced similar rhetoric during campaigns, even as no criminal charge has been announced in her case.
