Why is the Community Shield being held in Wales?

BBC Sport reports that the 2026 Community Shield will be staged at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium because Wembley Stadium is unavailable on the same date. The match between Arsenal and Manchester City is scheduled for Saturday, 16 August, when Wembley is also due to host The Weeknd’s “After Hours til Dawn” tour.

According to BBC Sport’s Ask Me Anything team, this will be the first time since 2006 that the fixture has been held in Wales. The Principality Stadium previously became a regular temporary home for major English football showpiece matches between 2001 and 2007, when the old Wembley was demolished and the replacement stadium was being built. Wembley resumed hosting the FA Cup final in 2007 after reopening.

The Community Shield has occasionally moved away from London since the new Wembley opened. BBC Sport notes that Villa Park hosted Manchester City against Chelsea in 2012 because Wembley was in use for Olympic football, while Leicester City’s King Power Stadium staged the 2022 edition between Manchester City and Liverpool because Wembley was hosting the Women’s European Championship final.

The fixture, formerly known as the Charity Shield, has a long history of being played at different grounds. BBC Sport lists past venues including Stamford Bridge, Highbury, White Hart Lane, Old Trafford, Maine Road, The Den, Molineux and Filbert Street, as well as both versions of Wembley and the Principality Stadium. The venue change matters because the Community Shield is traditionally English football’s curtain-raiser, and its relocation reflects how stadium scheduling can affect even long-established national fixtures.
