Why have the Premier League announced Christmas fixtures early?

What the report says
The Premier League has brought forward the announcement of its festive fixture list for the 2026-27 season, releasing match dates and kick-off times for rounds 17 to 20 more than a month earlier than planned. BBC Sport reported that the league had originally intended to confirm the December and January schedule in the week beginning 19 October, but the relevant games were published earlier after agreement with broadcast partners.
According to the league, the change was made so live UK television selections for the Christmas and New Year period could be finalised sooner. The early release also gives supporters more than three months to organise travel and other plans during a congested part of the season. The Premier League said it had consulted the Football Supporters’ Association and representatives from club Fan Advisory Boards.
BBC Sport noted that the announced window covers matches from Boxing Day through Thursday, 7 January. There will be seven fixtures on Boxing Day and one on New Year’s Day. The remaining December fixtures, along with those scheduled for November, are still due to be announced on their original dates.
In broader context, the Premier League’s scheduling process is shaped by broadcast selections, stadium logistics and supporter planning, particularly over the holiday period when travel demand is high and fixture changes can have practical impact on fans.
