The outlet reported that roughly 60,000 people entered the territory over a few days, overwhelming local reception centres before most were later returned to Morocco. Spain’s interior minister said the situation had largely been brought back under control, while border patrols and extra police and military units remained in place.

Al Jazeera said the emergency video conference was requested by Ireland, which holds the rotating EU presidency, after 22 of the bloc’s 27 member states signed a joint letter urging stronger protection of the EU’s external borders. The letter warned against uncontrolled mass crossings and what it described as the use of migration as a hybrid pressure tactic. Several European governments also responded separately: France announced more police at its border with Spain, Portugal said it would tighten controls, and Italy temporarily suspended part of Schengen arrangements with Spain, though the practical effect was unclear because the two countries do not share a land border.
