Why are European countries moving their gold out of North America?

What the report says
The Netherlands’ central bank has confirmed that it moved 86 tonnes of gold from storage in North America to the Bank of England in London, saying the change was meant to improve preparedness for severe crises and to make the reserves easier to use if needed. BBC World News reported that the gold was transferred between March and August this year, from a wider Dutch holding of about 313 tonnes kept in the US and Canada.
The Dutch move comes as several European central banks rethink where they keep their bullion. BBC World News noted that France has also brought gold back from the US, while Germany earlier repatriated more than 216 tonnes from New York and Paris over several years. Analysts cited by the BBC said these decisions are being shaped by geopolitical uncertainty, trade tensions and the desire to store reserves in places where they can be accessed or traded quickly.
The Bank of England remains a major global gold custodian, with large vault holdings and a long-standing role in the market. Some of the Dutch metal was transferred physically, while other amounts were shifted through sales and purchases in different locations. According to the BBC’s reporting, central banks have been accumulating gold at a faster pace in recent years, reflecting its appeal as a reserve asset during periods of instability and inflation concerns.
The broader significance is that gold storage is becoming a strategic issue for reserve managers, balancing security, access and cost as governments look for resilience in an uncertain world.
