What the report says

BBC Sport says the league phase draw for the 2026-27 Europa League is set for Friday, 28 August at 12:00 BST in Monaco. The competition will feature 36 clubs, with 20 already confirmed and the rest to be added from the final rounds of Champions League and Europa League qualifying.

The draw format remains the same as in recent seasons: each team will play eight different opponents, split evenly between home and away matches. Clubs will be divided into four pots according to Uefa club coefficient rankings, and no side can be paired with another from its own country. The top eight after the league phase advance directly to the last 16, places nine to 24 enter a knockout play-off, and teams from 25th to 36th are eliminated.

BBC Sport notes that several major names are already placed or close to being placed. Bayer Leverkusen, Juventus, AC Milan, AZ Alkmaar, Olympiakos, Real Sociedad and Marseille are among those expected in pot one, while Celtic are confirmed for pot two. English sides Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Sunderland are likely to land in pot two or three. Union Saint-Gilloise, Sturm Graz, Celta Vigo and others remain dependent on qualifying results.

The article is a guide to the draw rather than a match report, and it helps explain how qualification and seeding could shape the route for clubs across Europe, including those still fighting to reach the competition.
