WhatsApp launches web calling alongside new features: call transfer, waiting room - 9to5Google

What the report says
9to5Google reports that WhatsApp is formally rolling out voice and video calling through WhatsApp Web, bringing browser-based calling to both one-to-one and group conversations without requiring a desktop app download. The feature, which the outlet says had been in testing for months, is now launching with support for tools already associated with WhatsApp calling, including screen sharing, emoji reactions, a Calls tab, call history and favorites.
The update also adds several call-management features across WhatsApp. Call Transfer lets users move an active group call between devices, such as shifting from a phone or tablet to WhatsApp Web or Desktop, without ending the session and joining again. WhatsApp is also introducing a Waiting Room option for call links when organizers enable approval before entry, giving hosts more control over who joins and when.
Other additions focus on call quality. According to the report, QuickHD is intended to deliver high-definition video sooner at the start of a call, while a noise suppression setting can reduce background sound and can be managed during a call. WhatsApp also says web calls remain end-to-end encrypted, with no time limits and no cost.
The launch matters because it makes WhatsApp’s calling features more flexible for people using shared computers, work laptops that restrict app installs, or users who prefer staying in a browser. More broadly, the update positions WhatsApp Web as a fuller companion to the mobile app, not just a messaging interface.
