BBC Sport reports that Chelsea have completed a £117m deal to sign England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, making him the most expensive British player. Rogers, who had returned from World Cup duty in the United States, travelled to London for a medical and agreed a six-year contract with an option for an additional season. The transfer was published on 20 July 2026 and updated the following day.

According to BBC football reporter Nizaar Kinsella, the move was unexpected because Arsenal had widely been viewed as likely contenders if Villa sold their key asset. Chelsea had monitored Rogers for more than two years and accelerated talks after England’s semi-final defeat by Argentina. The report says sporting directors, head coach Xabi Alonso, co-owner Behdad Eghbali and even captain Reece James helped make the club’s pitch, with the deal agreed before Rogers played in England’s bronze-medal win over France.

The BBC says Rogers could mainly be used from the left, with Cole Palmer operating centrally, though Alonso may also use a back-three shape that allows both to play as attacking midfielders. Rogers has a long-standing friendship with Palmer from their Manchester City academy days and also knows several Chelsea players through England or City links. His arrival follows a season in which Chelsea finished 10th and struggled for goals at times.

The fee also sharpens questions about Chelsea’s squad size and finances. BBC Sport notes the club already has a large senior group, several attacking options and more summer additions expected, meaning sales or loans are likely. The report adds that Chelsea and Villa have both faced scrutiny under financial rules, with Villa’s position contributing to the sale.
