Germany has formally accused Russia of being behind an attempted drone attack last month at Leipzig-Halle airport, a state-owned cargo hub in eastern Germany, according to Al Jazeera’s report citing Reuters and The Associated Press. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said intelligence officials concluded the explosive-laden drone found near a runway was consistent with Russian technology. Officials also said a second drone was destroyed after it collided with an aircraft near the airport. The incident briefly shut down operations and raised concerns about safety at a major transport facility.

Berlin has not publicly released the full evidence, but Dobrindt said investigators saw a pattern linking the device to Russia and described the operation as involving people acting on behalf of Russian state entities. Germany has responded with punitive steps, including plans to close the Russian consulate in Bonn and the Russian House in Berlin, plus possible support for additional EU sanctions and tighter entry controls for Russian citizens. The German foreign ministry also summoned Russia’s ambassador.

Russia denied involvement, calling the claims absurd and warning of consequences. President Vladimir Putin suggested Germany was trying to deflect from domestic problems and may have framed Moscow. Several NATO and EU partners, including Poland, Italy, the UK, Sweden and the Czech Republic, backed Germany’s position.
