What is FC Barcelona’s Negreira case, and what are the charges?

What the report says
Real Madrid has intensified its challenge over the long-running Negreira affair, urging UEFA to finish its review “with utmost urgency” after the European governing body said it had received a large dossier from the Spanish club. The dispute centres on payments Barcelona allegedly made between 2001 and 2018 to companies linked to Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, the former vice president of Spain’s refereeing committee, in a case that has raised concerns about possible influence over match officials.
According to Al Jazeera’s report, Spanish prosecutors formally charged Barcelona in March 2023, along with former presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell, Negreira and his son, on corruption-related accusations. The club has denied wrongdoing, saying the money covered refereeing reports and advice. UEFA opened its own investigation in 2023, and its inspectors are now reviewing new material submitted by Real Madrid. The governing body previously decided in June 2023 that Barcelona would not face punishment at that stage.
Real Madrid says the matter affects the integrity of competition and the credibility of refereeing. Spanish media reports, cited by Al Jazeera, say the club has even sought the removal of titles won by Barcelona during the payment period, though that remains an allegation rather than a confirmed outcome. Barcelona says the latest UEFA step does not reopen a closed case, but rather continues the existing process.
The case matters because it sits at the intersection of football governance, criminal proceedings and one of the sport’s fiercest rivalries. It could also add tension ahead of the next El Clasico meeting in La Liga.
