What the report says

Ireland and Israel’s second Nations League meeting ended in a 1-1 draw at the TSC Arena in Bačka Topola, Serbia, but the match was overshadowed by political tension and postgame controversy. Al Jazeera reported that the game, played behind closed doors at a neutral venue on Sunday, capped a difficult two-week period around the fixture, following Ireland’s 3-0 win in the first meeting on September 27.

The outlet said Irish media reported an allegation that an Israeli player spat at Damien Doyle, one of Ireland’s coaches, after halftime. Ireland coach Heimir Hallgrimson declined to give details and said a disciplinary committee would be better placed to examine the incident. Israel coach Ran Ben-Shimon said he had not seen what happened. Al Jazeera also noted that UEFA and the Football Association of Ireland had not publicly commented on whether any inquiry had been opened.

The match had already been marked by symbolic protest. Before the first game, the Irish side had informed Israel it would not take part in pre-match handshakes, and Irish players wore black armbands and bowed their heads during Israel’s anthem. The FAI also staged the fixture in Serbia amid domestic pressure to boycott the game because of Ireland’s strong pro-Palestinian sentiment.

The report said the teams will not meet again in this Nations League cycle. Hallgrimsson described the episode as exhausting for his squad and suggested UEFA should handle such politically sensitive pairings more carefully.
