Western Uganda local leaders in Kyankwanzi for NRM Manifesto implementation team retreat

Regional local government leaders from Western Uganda are meeting this week at the National Institute of Leadership in Kyankwanzi District for a training retreat organized by the Manifesto Implementation Unit (MIU), according to The Independent Uganda. The program is designed to build participants’ understanding of the National Resistance Movement’s 2026-2031 manifesto commitments and improve their ability to turn those pledges into local plans, budgets and tracked results.

The five-day retreat is bringing together at least 200 people, including resident district and city commissioners, district chairpersons, NRM leaders, mayors, chief administrative officers and municipal and town clerks from sub-regions including Ankole, Bunyoro, Kigezi and Rwenzori. The publication reported that MIU sees local officials as the key link between national commitments and citizens, with responsibilities that include coordination, monitoring and public accountability.

The meeting comes as the Ministry of Local Government continues nationwide inspections focused on accountability and anti-corruption, with concerns already raised about misuse of public resources, weak project delivery and gaps in reporting. Minister for the Presidency Babirye Milly Babalanda said the retreat is meant to help leaders translate manifesto promises into visible results in districts, cities and municipalities.

More broadly, the retreat is part of MIU’s regional series for FY 2026/27 and is intended to improve evidence-based reporting, share practical lessons and strengthen oversight of government programs. The Independent Uganda said the Western Region session will be followed by similar engagements in other parts of the country.
