West Nile gospel artist’s continental win reflects changing face of Africa’s music industry

The outlet said he beat nominees from Nigeria, Kenya and Rwanda in a category decided through public voting and expert assessment, marking a notable continental recognition for a Ugandan artist working outside the region’s traditional entertainment centres.

According to The Independent, Feni’s rise has been driven largely by online distribution rather than the more conventional route of major concerts, labels or television exposure. His music is carried on platforms including Spotify, YouTube, Audiomack, Boomplay, SoundCloud and Shazam, and the report said it has generated more than three million streams.
