West Africa: Ecowas Reaffirms 2027 Launch of Eco Single Currency

AllAfrica, carrying a Daba Finance report, said West African leaders have renewed plans to introduce the ECO single currency in 2027, but with a phased rollout. The decision was made by heads of state and government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at a meeting in Lungi, Sierra Leone, on July 19, according to the report.

Under the approach described by Daba Finance, only countries that satisfy ECOWAS macroeconomic convergence requirements would enter the monetary union at launch. Other member states would be able to join later once they meet the standards. The reported criteria include single-digit inflation, budget deficits capped at 4% of GDP, limits on central bank financing of government deficits, and foreign reserves covering at least three months of imports, alongside targets on tax collection, spending, exchange-rate stability and real interest rates.

The report said leaders welcomed consultations between the ECOWAS Commission and central bank governors on unresolved technical questions. Guinea’s request to join the Presidential Task Force overseeing the currency programme was approved, and the Commission was asked to convene a meeting before the December 2026 ECOWAS summit. The Commission and the West African Monetary Agency were also directed to deepen coordination with central banks and broaden international trademark protection for the ECO.

The move matters because ECOWAS has repeatedly postponed the common currency, including earlier target dates in 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2020. A phased launch could help the bloc avoid waiting for all members to qualify at once, though the project’s success would still depend on fiscal discipline, monetary coordination and sustained political support.
