Fox News reported on a recent, independently published study by Harvard economics professor Rebecca Diamond that links GLP-1-related weight loss with changes in some women’s relationship and employment outcomes. The research used the University of Southern California’s Understanding America Study to compare women who began GLP-1 drugs for weight loss with women who wanted the medications but had not yet started them.

According to Fox News, the analysis excluded people using GLP-1 drugs for diabetes and focused on women because they are more likely than men to use the medications. Among single women who lost weight after starting the drugs, marriage or cohabitation increased by 29% after roughly 18 months. For women who were unemployed at the beginning of the study, employment prospects rose by 27% over a similar period. Women who already had jobs did not show a clear career boost.

Experts cited by Fox News cautioned that the findings should not be read as proof that the drugs directly caused the social or economic changes. The study was observational, relied on self-reported information and has not yet been peer reviewed. Dr. Peter Balazs, who was not involved in the work, said the pattern appeared strongest in “new match” settings such as dating or job interviews, suggesting weight bias may be a factor. Other experts said confidence after weight loss could also influence outcomes.

The report matters because GLP-1 medications are increasingly used for obesity treatment, while employers and policymakers continue to confront concerns about appearance-based bias. Fox News noted there is no federal ban on weight discrimination, though some jurisdictions have added protections.
