Washington Post ordered to rehire Karen Attiah after Charlie Kirk posts

An independent arbitrator has ordered the Washington Post to reinstate former opinion columnist Karen Attiah and pay back wages after concluding the paper did not have enough cause to fire her. Al Jazeera, citing the arbitrator’s ruling and Reuters, reported that the decision found the Post had violated its labor agreement and failed to show gross misconduct.

Attiah was dismissed in September 2025 after social media posts she made about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. According to the report, the Post said at the time that the posts breached its social media policy, which requires staff to behave respectfully online and avoid harming the paper’s credibility. The dispute centered on posts Attiah made on Bluesky following Kirk’s killing, including one that referred to his past remarks about Black women.

Attiah said the ruling confirmed her view that she had been doing her job as an opinion writer and was wrongfully terminated. She had spent more than a decade at the Post, where she worked on race, gender and global human rights, according to her statement quoted by Al Jazeera.

The case comes amid broader debate over the Washington Post’s editorial direction under owner Jeff Bezos and a year of financial strain and layoffs at the newspaper. More generally, it also reflects the wider backlash many public figures faced online after Kirk’s death, though the arbiter’s decision focused on the labor dispute rather than the politics of that campaign.
