Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg's defense a mixed bag in NBA Summer League - NBC Sports Bay Area & California

What the report says
NBC Sports Bay Area’s Dalton Johnson reported from Las Vegas that Golden State Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg had an uneven defensive showing during NBA Summer League, even as his overall performance helped Golden State win the summer league title. Lendeborg, the Warriors’ No. 11 overall pick and their top selection this year, drew attention immediately with a perfect shooting debut at the California Classic and finished the summer slate averaging 14.9 points while shooting 48.4% from the field and 45.9% from three.
The report noted that defense was expected to be Lendeborg’s early calling card after he earned consecutive AAC Defensive Player of the Year honors at UAB and later made the Big Ten All-Defense team at Michigan. Instead, Warriors summer league coach Khalid Robinson pointed to lapses in awareness, saying young defenders must stay engaged and learn to anticipate plays rather than react late. Lendeborg also assessed his own defense harshly after a game against Memphis, saying it had not matched his previous standard and citing missed off-ball assignments.
Johnson wrote that Lendeborg’s defensive impact improved as the tournament progressed. In a win over the Knicks, he struggled offensively but posted a plus-12 with a steal and two blocks, then added another steal-and-two-block game in the semifinals. In the championship game, he was credited with two steals and secured important late defensive rebounds, including after contesting Cameron Boozer near the basket.
The evaluation matters for Golden State because Lendeborg’s physical tools, college résumé and unexpected shooting have raised expectations, but his path to an NBA role may depend on making his defensive awareness and point-of-attack work more consistent.
