What the report says

Wanyange Girls Secondary School in Jinja will increase school fees by Shs300,000 per term from the 2027 academic year, lifting the flat charge from Shs1.1 million to Shs1.4 million. Nile Post reported that the announcement was made at the school’s Annual General Meeting on Sunday, November 1, where some parents objected and urged the administration to consider a smaller increase.

According to the report, the school’s Parents Teachers Association had already approved the adjustment at an earlier meeting, and PTA chairman Thomas Ikanga said that decision stood. Headteacher Deborah Basekanakyo Wesonga defended the rise, linking it to higher costs for commodities, fuel, utilities and other services needed to run the government-aided school. She also said the school is funding infrastructure work, including dormitory construction and a borehole or water-drilling project to improve accommodation and water supply.

The article said Wanyange Girls has 1,002 students and 104 staff members, but only 33 staff are on the government payroll, leaving the school to cover the rest through parent fees. The school also said it would allow parents to pay in two instalments if needed. Nile Post added that the fee increase comes amid broader cost-of-living pressures in Uganda and follows a pattern of school fee disputes seen in recent years as institutions respond to inflation and rising operating costs.
