What the report says

Parents at English Medium Nursery and Primary School in Wakiso District initially pressed for more information about the ongoing measles-rubella vaccination campaign before allowing their children to be immunised, according to Nile Post. The concern was tied to a desire for prior sensitisation, with some parents saying government programmes that affect families should be explained clearly before being implemented.

Health officials later met the parents at the school and outlined the purpose of the exercise, which targets children aged nine to 59 months. The discussion was led by Ministry of Health representative Dr Emmanuel Mukisa and Wakiso district health officials, including Deputy District Health Officer Betty Nabuganda. After the engagement, the children at the school were vaccinated.

Nabuganda said the district is aiming to reach more than 500,000 children in the campaign and noted that officials had not received reports of serious complications among vaccinated children. School inspector Jannat Nakabugo said the exercise had already reached about 400 schools in Wakiso and urged institutions to cooperate, especially after the campaign was extended by two days to help cover more eligible children.

The episode highlights the importance of public communication in immunisation drives, particularly when campaigns are large and involve many schools and families. The school founder, Peter Kikomeko, said the institution was not obstructing the programme and welcomed the officials’ decision to engage parents directly.
