Wakiso marks World Environment Day with tree planting, PDM showcase

Wakiso District marked the 2026 World Environment Day with events that combined environmental awareness and a showcase of Parish Development Model beneficiaries. According to Nile Post, the district used the occasion to urge residents to protect wetlands, plant trees and use natural resources sustainably as part of wider climate action efforts. The celebrations were held on Monday at Mende Kalema Memorial Secondary School in Mende Sub-county under the theme, “Climate Action Begins With You. Act Now,” and drew residents, students, local leaders and government officials.

The programme included a brass band procession from the Mende Sub-county headquarters to the school. District and sub-county leaders, together with the chief guest, Deputy Resident District Commissioner for Makindye-Ssabagabo Simon Mawerere, also visited PDM beneficiaries to see how the government initiative was affecting household incomes. The delegation toured a dairy farmer, a piggery farmer and a goat farmer in different parts of Mende, with district chairperson Eng. Ian Kyeyune praising the beneficiaries for using the funds productively and encouraging them to serve as examples in their communities.

Officials from the district’s Natural Resources and Environment departments warned against tree cutting, wetland encroachment and poor waste disposal, saying these practices contribute to climate change. Kyeyune and Mawerere both called on residents to balance economic use of natural resources with conservation, while a Ministry of Water and Environment official commended Wakiso for sustaining environmental efforts despite limited resources. The event highlighted how local development programmes and conservation messaging are being linked in district-level climate advocacy.
