What the report says

Wakiso District Local Government says it has stepped up a campaign to improve sanitation and solid waste management, with leaders approving new measures to reduce illegal dumping, expand garbage collection and encourage waste sorting and recycling. The decisions were reached at a consultative meeting chaired by District Chairperson Eng. Ian Kyeyune and attended by Local Council III chairpersons, town clerks, senior community development assistants and members of the district executive committee.

According to the district’s statement, the plan includes setting up sanitation committees to work with health inspectors and communities to identify households that need garbage collection services. Officials also plan to involve residents through community meetings to agree on service providers and collection fees, while local councils are expected to provide budget support for waste management.

The district further said it will tighten enforcement against illegal dumping by recruiting scouts to identify offenders and applying the polluter-pays principle. Schools, churches and other institutions will support public sensitisation, and young people will be encouraged to take part in collection, sorting and recycling activities as possible income-generating work.

The district also plans a technical review of Menvu Landfill in Nansana Municipality, subject to National Environment Management Authority authorization, and will seek extra garbage trucks from KCCA. The initiative comes ahead of National Cleaning Day on 29 August 2026, which the district says should help build longer-term community responsibility for cleaner neighbourhoods and healthier living conditions.
