Wakiso District Trains Interns to Champion Human Rights, Strengthen Public Service Delivery

Nile Post reported that Wakiso District has held a human rights orientation for interns, aimed at preparing young professionals to promote accountability, equity and good governance as they move into public service and other careers. The training was organized by the Wakiso District Human Rights Committee and focused on human rights principles, protection of human rights defenders, and practical ways to improve justice and service delivery in communities.

According to the report, Wakiso District LC V Chairperson Eng. Ian Kyeyune praised the committee, chaired by Elly Kasirye, for targeting interns with the initiative. Kyeyune said equity was a major concern for his leadership and linked the district’s work to a broader commitment to transparency and anti-corruption in government service delivery, citing President Yoweri Museveni’s directive on accountability.

Kasirye said interns were selected because they are likely to become future public servants and community leaders. He highlighted rights such as education, freedom of religion, expression and access to basic services, and emphasized principles including equality, inclusivity, dignity, the rule of law, public participation and accountability.

The report said facilitators from the Centre for Health, Human Rights and Development connected human rights to access to services such as health care, clean water, education and social protection. They urged citizens to treat quality public services as constitutional entitlements and encouraged interns to identify gaps, report discrimination and support rights-based approaches in workplaces and communities. The training matters because it seeks to embed human rights awareness in the next generation of professionals serving one of Uganda’s most populous districts.
