Wakiso District Expands Lukwanga Solar Piped Water Supply System to Increase

Wakiso District Local Government reports that the Government of Uganda is expanding the Lukwanga Solar Piped Water Supply System in Wakiso Sub-county to serve more communities beyond its original coverage area. The system, first planned for Lukwanga Village, is being extended to the neighbouring villages of Ntinda, Kyeberese, Muyenje, Gimbo and Nabukalu, where demand for safe water has increased.

According to the district, the project is valued at UGX 1.1 billion, began in the 2025/2026 financial year and is scheduled for completion by January 2027. District Water Officer Isaac Galabuzi said completed works include a production borehole, a 34kW solar pumping system, a powerhouse, a guard house, toilet facilities, 2.4 kilometres of transmission pipeline and an 86,000-litre reservoir.

The district says the upgraded scheme is expected to provide reliable safe water access to about 7,000 people, or roughly 1,400 households. During a project inspection, Wakiso District LCV Chairperson Eng. Ian Kyeyune Sengonzi instructed the water engineer and contractor to keep to the agreed timeline while maintaining construction standards, using appropriate materials and involving local residents where possible.

The report says residents agreed to contribute UGX 100 per jerrycan to support operations and maintenance, alongside community protection of the infrastructure. If completed as planned, the expansion could reduce the time residents, especially women and children, spend collecting water and support sanitation and public health in the beneficiary villages.
