Wakiso District Champions Climate Action During World Environment Day 2026 Celebrations

Wakiso District Local Government reported that it marked World Environment Day 2026 on July 30 at Mende Kalema Memorial Secondary School in Mende Sub-county, calling for stronger community involvement in environmental protection and climate resilience. The commemoration was held under the theme “Climate Action Begins with You – Act Now,” with district officials emphasizing that conservation should be part of daily livelihoods and local development efforts.

According to the district, the event drew residents, students, local leaders and government officials. Activities included a brass band procession, tree planting, community clean-up work, exhibitions, public awareness sessions and visits to Parish Development Model-supported projects. Leaders toured dairy, piggery and goat-rearing enterprises and praised beneficiaries for linking income-generating activities with more sustainable farming practices.

The celebrations were officiated by Deputy Resident District Commissioner for Makindye–Ssabagabo Simon Mawerere, Wakiso District Chairperson Eng. Ian Kyeyune Sengonzi and Mende Sub-county Chairperson Wilson Mulondo. The district said Sengonzi urged residents to protect wetlands, expand tree planting and pursue livelihoods that do not undermine the environment. District Natural Resources Officer Rebecca Ssabanganzi also warned that wetland encroachment, tree cutting and poor waste disposal remain major threats to local ecosystems and climate resilience.

Officials from the Ministry of Water and Environment encouraged stronger community stewardship, while Mawerere called for public participation in tree planting and wetland restoration. The event ended with the donation of wheeled waste bins to Mende Kalema Memorial Secondary School and Mende Kalema Memorial Primary School, presented as a practical step toward better waste management in the area.
