Viral video shows Cubs fan being slapped for not standing during National Anthem - NBC 5 Chicago

What the report says
NBC Chicago reported that a viral video from Wrigley Field has prompted widespread online debate after a Chicago Cubs fan was slapped during the National Anthem. The incident apparently happened in the grandstands before Sunday’s Cubs game against the Minnesota Twins, with the video posted over the weekend and the article published July 21, 2026, then updated July 22.
According to NBC Chicago, the video shows a man identified as Bob Chavez repeatedly urging a younger fan to stand for the anthem before striking him on the back of the head. The younger fan then stood. Chavez, described as a Vietnam veteran, later told Inside Edition that he regretted how he handled the confrontation, while still expressing his belief that people should stand for the anthem.
The Cubs said in a statement that security personnel spoke with the fan who had been hit. The team said the fan considered the matter resolved, did not want anyone removed from the ballpark and did not seek further action. The Cubs also said they encourage fans who are able to stand and remove caps during the anthem, while emphasizing that fan safety is a priority and that the team’s code of conduct bars physical confrontations and threatening behavior.
NBC Chicago reported that Chicago police said no officers were called to the stadium and no police report was filed. Online reaction has focused on the slap, whether consequences should have followed, and broader arguments about personal choice and expectations during the National Anthem at sporting events.
