Villa close in on Atletico defender Ruggeri

What the report says
Aston Villa are close to signing Atletico Madrid left-back Matteo Ruggeri, according to Nile Post, with the move described as progressing toward a transfer to Villa Park. The 24-year-old is expected to arrive after only one season in Spain, following his move from Atalanta last summer.
The reported deal comes as Villa reshape their options at left-back. Lucas Digne has already left the club for Paris Saint-Germain, while manager Unai Emery is said to be seeking more physicality in the position. BBC Sport’s coverage, cited in the source material, also noted Villa had considered other targets, including AC Milan defender Pervis Estupinan, before moving ahead with Ruggeri.
Ruggeri made 47 appearances for Atletico last season as the club finished fourth in La Liga and reached the Copa del Rey final. Before that, he came through Atalanta’s academy and helped the Italian club win the Europa League in 2024, earning a place in the competition’s team of the season. He has also been involved in Italy’s youth setups and received a senior call-up in 2025, though he has not yet made his debut at that level.
The transfer is relevant because it could shape Villa’s defensive setup ahead of the new season, including their upcoming Super Cup meeting with PSG in Salzburg.
