Victoria University Boss Hails Kampala University Founder as “True Giant” of Ugandan Education

Kampala-based higher education leaders were featured in a public tribute after Victoria University Vice Chancellor Dr. Lawrence Muganga praised Professor Badru Dungu Kateregga, the founding vice chancellor and proprietor of Kampala University, as a major figure in Uganda’s education sector. The remarks were shared on X on Tuesday and were accompanied by photographs of the two academics at a public event.

According to Watchdog Uganda, Muganga described Kateregga as a scholar, diplomat and builder, and said he admired his long-standing effort to widen access to university education for young Ugandans. The tribute highlighted Kateregga’s career in public service and academia, including work as Uganda’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, the Gulf States and Pakistan, as well as teaching roles at Makerere University and Kenyatta.

The article said Kateregga founded Kampala University in 1999, and that the institution later received licensing from the National Council for Higher Education in 2000. It has since expanded into a multi-campus university with sites in Ggaba, Mutundwe, Luweero, Masaka and Jinja, and has enrolled large numbers of students over time.
