What the report says

Uganda’s basketball veterans are set to return to competitive action through the new LEGACY Basketball League 2026, a minileague designed to keep former players active while promoting fitness, fellowship and mental wellbeing. According to The Observer, the inaugural event is scheduled for November 13 to December 12 and will bring together ex-players from several teams to renew rivalries and reconnect through the sport.

The league is expected to include sides such as Lugogo Wazee A and B, No Country Nakasero, Silomaville, Penters Kyanja Vets, Kirinnya Vets, Entebbe Riders Vets and Abja Park Vets. The article says former Harp Hamilton veterans will also be part of the competition, while Power basketball club legend Isaac Afidra is among those expected to feature. Games will be played at the former GEMS Cambridge facility in Butabika, now linked to JEPH International University.

Tournament director Chris Kyembabe said the project is meant to do more than settle scores on court. He said it is intended to help veterans stay healthy, stay connected and continue contributing to basketball, with possible mentoring roles for younger players. The league will use two conferences, with playoffs after the regular season and an awards ceremony on December 12.

Organisers are also considering wider programming, including financial literacy and investment workshops, and are in talks with potential partners. The Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations is providing technical support, while the age limits allow men 35 and above and women 33 and above, with a provision for a limited number of younger female players.
