What the report says

Al Jazeera, reporting with AP and Reuters, said US Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance announced the birth of their fourth child, a son named Alec Neel Vance. The couple said the baby was born on Sunday at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and that both Usha Vance and the child were doing well.

The report said the birth is historically notable because Alec Neel Vance is the first child born to a sitting US vice president in more than 150 years. Al Jazeera cited the White House Historical Association in noting that the previous such case was in 1870, when Vice President Schuyler Colfax and his second wife, Ellen Wade, had a son while Colfax was in office.

Vance, originally from Ohio, and Usha Vance met at Yale Law School and graduated in 2013, according to the report. Their other children are Ewan, born in 2017; Vivek, born in 2020; and Mirabel, born in 2021. The article also noted Vance’s past public emphasis on family formation and birth rates, including remarks during his political rise and at the 2025 March for Life rally.

The birth adds a personal milestone to the vice president’s tenure and gives a rare modern example of a young child being born into the immediate family of a top constitutional officer. Al Jazeera also placed it in the context of recent births among senior figures in President Donald Trump’s administration.
