BBC World News reports that a US service member was killed in northern Iraq on Saturday after what US Central Command described as an Iranian attack, with another service member wounded. According to Centcom, the fatality occurred during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian attack drone.

The incident came one day after an attack on a US base in Jordan killed two US soldiers and left another missing. Centcom said it had recovered unidentified remains at the Jordan site and that efforts to verify them were continuing. BBC said verified footage from inside the Jordanian facility showed multiple impacts and an explosion.

The deaths were reported amid an eighth day of escalating US-Iran exchanges, after a preliminary ceasefire collapsed within weeks. The BBC report says Washington has reimposed a blockade on Iranian ports, while Tehran has declared the Strait of Hormuz closed and has targeted US allies in the region. The US military said its latest strikes were intended to reduce Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping and punish IRGC forces it blamed for the Jordan attack.

Regional fallout also widened. Jordan said it intercepted three Iranian missiles and summoned Iran’s chargé d’affaires in Amman, while Kuwait reported a renewed strike on an electricity and water plant. Iranian media said sites including Darkhoveyn and Qeshm Island were hit; the UN nuclear watchdog urged restraint and noted Darkhoveyn was at an early stage and had no nuclear material during its last visit. BBC reported the US death toll in the conflict has reached 17, while Iran’s health ministry says at least 50 people have been killed in US strikes over three weeks.
