US signs landmark nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia

The US Department of Energy said a related bilateral safeguards agreement was also signed, framing the package as the legal basis for a long-term, multibillion-dollar partnership tied to economic, strategic and nonproliferation goals.

The full text of the agreement has not been released. US media reports cited in the article suggest it may allow Saudi Arabia to enrich uranium domestically in the future, potentially at a US-built facility. Uranium enrichment can provide fuel for power generation, but it is also sensitive because highly enriched material can be used in nuclear weapons. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the arrangements would maintain high standards for nuclear safety and nonproliferation, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US would not enter a deal that created proliferation risks.

The report says President Donald Trump has not required Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to recognize Israel as a condition of the deal, a demand Washington had previously linked to Saudi nuclear cooperation. The agreement now goes to Congress for review, where some opposition is expected, including from Democrats such as Senator Edward Markey.

The deal matters because it could affect Middle East security calculations at a time of heightened conflict involving the US, Iran and Iran-aligned groups. It may also differ from the 2009 US-UAE nuclear agreement, under which the UAE accepted limits including reliance on imported nuclear fuel.
