US Senate blocks resolution seeking report on Americans killed in West Bank

The US Senate has blocked a resolution that would have required President Donald Trump’s administration to produce a report on the killing of nine Americans in the occupied West Bank and on Israel’s treatment of Palestinian children held in military detention. According to Al Jazeera, the measure failed 47-53 in a vote on Tuesday and broke largely along party lines.

The resolution was introduced by Senator Chris Van Hollen, a Democrat from Maryland, who argued it was needed because of what he described as a lack of accountability by Israel’s government and an inability by the US to secure justice. Under the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, individual lawmakers can seek formal State Department reporting on human rights practices in countries receiving US security assistance.

Al Jazeera reported that the measure would have required an unclassified report within 30 days. It referenced the deaths of Americans in the West Bank since January 2022, including journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, as well as cases involving Palestinian-American minors detained by Israeli forces. The text also pointed to broader concerns raised by rights groups over violence in the West Bank and alleged abuses in military detention.

The vote matters because it reflects ongoing divisions in Washington over US policy toward Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, especially amid scrutiny of civilian deaths, detention practices, and accountability for abuses. Al Jazeera noted that only Senator Rand Paul, a Republican, joined Democrats in support of advancing the resolution.
