US school shooter pleads guilty in Georgia following father’s conviction

Gray, now 16, admitted responsibility in court for the September 4, 2024 shooting that killed two 14-year-old students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, and two teachers, Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Cristina Irimie, 53. One teacher and eight students were also injured.

The plea came after Gray’s father, Colin Gray, was convicted of second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. Investigators testified during the father’s trial that he knew of concerns about his son’s mental health and behavior, while Gray’s mother said she had pushed for weapons to be secured and access restricted.

Because Colt Gray pleaded guilty to murder, he faces at least life in prison. His trial had been scheduled to start in mid-October. Barrow County Superior Court Judge Nicholas Primm questioned him before accepting the plea to confirm that he understood the consequences and was acting voluntarily.

The case has drawn attention to how US prosecutors are examining parental responsibility in school shootings, especially when adults are accused of ignoring warning signs or allowing access to firearms.
