US launches new Iran strikes after two soldiers killed: What’s the latest?

Al Jazeera, citing its staff and Reuters, reported that the United States carried out another round of strikes on Iran after two American soldiers were killed in an Iranian attack in Jordan late Friday. The attacks marked the eighth straight night of US operations against Iran since the conflict resumed earlier in July, a development the outlet said was further weakening fragile ceasefire efforts.

According to the report, US Central Command said its forces targeted Iranian coastal surveillance and air-defence sites, maritime capabilities, and missile and drone storage locations linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation separately said the under-construction Darkhovin nuclear power plant site in Khuzestan province was hit early Sunday local time. Iranian media also reported explosions or strikes around Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island, Sirik, Shadegan and other southern areas, while the IRGC said it downed a US MQ-9 drone near Ahvaz.

Iran also widened its response in the Gulf. Al Jazeera reported that Iran’s army said it launched drones at two US military facilities in Kuwait, including Camp al-Adiri and Ali Al Salem airbase, while Kuwait’s military said its air defences were responding to hostile missiles and drones. In Bahrain, air raid sirens sounded, including in Manama, and authorities urged residents to seek safe places.

The escalation matters because the affected areas sit near the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route. US President Donald Trump linked the strikes to the deaths of the soldiers and reiterated opposition to Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon. Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei as reported by Al Jazeera, warned of severe retaliation and accused Washington of breaching a recent memorandum of understanding.
