US House passes $1.15 trillion military bill expanding Israel cooperation

Al Jazeera, citing its staff, Reuters and The Associated Press, reported that the Republican-led US House of Representatives narrowly approved a $1.15 trillion military spending package on Wednesday, advancing the 2027 National Defence Authorisation Act by a 216-212 vote. The roll call was mostly partisan, though six Democrats supported the bill and seven Republicans voted against it.

The measure reflects President Donald Trump’s push for a major increase in US military spending, with Al Jazeera reporting that his request would raise the budget from about $900bn last year toward $1.5 trillion. The outlet said the bill is tied to funding for the US war on Iran, which it reported was launched by the US and Israel in late February, and includes provisions expanding military technology cooperation with Israel. Republican Representative Thomas Massie, a critic of the Iran war, objected publicly to what he described as deeper integration of US military technology and supply chains with Israel.

The bill’s path in the Senate remains uncertain. Al Jazeera reported that Democrats are expected to challenge the cost, especially as the White House seeks cuts to social programmes, and noted that Senate Democrats blocked debate on the NDAA last week. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer characterized the package as enabling the administration’s war policy.

Although the NDAA is usually treated in Washington as must-pass defence legislation, this version includes several disputed additions beyond core Pentagon authorization. According to Al Jazeera, those include Ukraine aid and the SAVE America Act, a Trump-backed voting measure framed by the administration as an election-security response.
