What the report says

The United States has approved a possible $2.1bn sale of Patriot PAC-3 missile interceptors to Ukraine, according to Al Jazeera’s report citing the US State Department. The package includes 500 missiles, along with related parts and support, and would mark one of the more significant US moves to provide defensive weapons to Kyiv since President Donald Trump began his second term in January 2025.

The report says the Patriot system is central to Ukraine’s air defence because it is designed to counter fast-moving ballistic missiles. The approval comes as Ukraine continues to face intense Russian missile and drone attacks, including strikes on civilian and energy infrastructure. Ukrainian officials have said they urgently need more interceptors, and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said earlier this week that Kyiv had been waiting nearly a month for Washington to authorize critical missile supplies.

Al Jazeera also noted that delivery is unlikely to be immediate. Two people briefed on the decision said the missiles have not yet been produced and may not reach Ukraine until well into the 2030s, reflecting the long timelines common in major arms sales. Ukraine is expected to fund the purchase through a mix of contributions from Canada, Germany and Norway under a US programme, plus European Union-backed financing.

Lockheed Martin is the main contractor, and the report places the sale in the wider context of pressure on US weapons inventories and efforts by Pentagon negotiators to speed up production.
