US destroys five Iranian tankers, Iran retaliates with attacks on Jordan

The United States says it struck and disabled five Iranian oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman and near Kharg Island after accusing Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of targeting a U.S. warship twice over two days. According to the U.S. Central Command, American forces ordered crews to leave before the vessels were hit. No U.S. personnel were reported harmed. Al Jazeera reported the tankers were identified as M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1, M/T Riesco and M/T Derya.

Iran said it responded with missile attacks on the Al Azraq base in Jordan, where U.S. forces are stationed. Jordan’s armed forces said its air defenses intercepted most of the missiles and that two landed in unpopulated areas; it said there were no casualties. The Iranian military also warned that any further attacks on its oil tankers could trigger strikes on U.S. bases in the region.

The exchange comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf and a broader confrontation involving the United States and Iran. Al Jazeera noted that the Strait of Hormuz remains closed and that Washington has imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports. Oil prices briefly rose during the fighting, underscoring the market risk tied to disruptions in the region.
