US bombs Iran for ninth consecutive night as Hormuz tensions escalate

Al Jazeera, citing its staff, Reuters, Iranian state-linked media and official statements, reported that the United States carried out a ninth straight night of air attacks on Iran on Monday, July 20, 2026. Iranian outlets described explosions in several locations, including southern coastal areas near the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf ports, as well as Tabriz in the northwest. Reported sites included Sirik, Jask, Chabahar, Konarak, Bandar Mahshahr, Bandar Imam Khomeini, Khvormuj and Tabriz.

The US military said the operation was intended to weaken Iranian capabilities used against commercial vessels and mariners in the Strait of Hormuz. It said targets included command centres, air defences, coastal surveillance, maritime assets, missile and drone launch sites, and communications infrastructure.
