Al Jazeera reported that the White House did not deny a Wall Street Journal account of the resignation when asked on Monday, but Reuters, citing a source familiar with the matter, said it was not clear whether the White House had accepted it. The Army declined to comment. Driscoll is described as close to US Vice President JD Vance.

A White House spokesperson praised Driscoll’s performance and said he had advanced President Donald Trump’s agenda at the Department of the Army through leadership, readiness efforts, support for military operations and involvement in talks tied to Russia and Ukraine. That statement also said the Army was stronger because of his work with Trump and Hegseth.

The departure comes amid broader turnover at the Pentagon. In April, Hegseth removed Army Chief of Staff Randy George in a major staffing change. More broadly, the report points to continuing adjustments in Trump administration defense leadership and possible implications for Army policy, Pentagon stability and civilian-military relations.
