US accuses dozens of countries of helping China avoid Trump’s tariffs

The Trump administration has accused more than 40 countries of helping China evade US tariffs through what the White House described as a transshipment network that relabels or reroutes goods before they reach the American market. In a report released on Thursday, the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy said the practice is costing the US government tens of billions of dollars a year in lost revenue, according to Al Jazeera’s reporting.

The report named the European Union, Mexico, Canada, India, Japan and South Korea among China’s biggest enablers, and also pointed to Southeast Asian countries including Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Cambodia. It said the most affected US industries include electrical equipment, integrated circuits, aluminium products and motor components. The White House said border officials are using artificial intelligence and tighter data-sharing to detect suspect shipments.

The report is part of a broader escalation in Trump’s trade policy since his return to office, with the administration also announcing new import levies on countries it says have ignored forced labour concerns. A group of Democratic-led US states is challenging those tariffs in court, arguing they are being used to revive earlier duties that were struck down. Trade experts quoted by Al Jazeera said the latest move appears aimed at increasing pressure on other countries to open their markets to US goods.
