What the report says

The Uganda Revenue Authority has defended its plan to link Tax Identification Numbers with National Identification Numbers, saying the measure is meant to make tax administration easier and improve cooperation between government agencies. According to the Nile Post report, URA said the linkage should reduce the need for people to repeatedly submit physical documents when seeking public services and help agencies exchange information more efficiently.

Speaking at the close of the four-day seventh Uganda Economic Forum, URA Commissioner for Domestic Taxes Dennis Kugonza Kateeba said the arrangement does not automatically turn every person whose NIN is linked into a taxpayer. He said tax liability still depends on a person’s economic activity and the relevant tax rules. He also encouraged business owners to use the Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing Solution, arguing that it can make compliance simpler, lower bookkeeping costs and strengthen record-keeping for loan applications.

The forum, held under a theme focused on putting money into people’s pockets, brought together officials and private-sector actors to discuss ways of translating economic opportunities into jobs, stronger businesses and higher household incomes. Discussions also covered Uganda’s creative industry, tourism, mineral development and preparations for AFCON, with speakers urging more professionalism, better understanding of intellectual property rights and greater use of digital platforms to help creators earn more from their work.
