UPPA Hails King Oyo’s 31-Year Legacy

The Uganda Parliamentary Press Association has paid tribute to the late Tooro King, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, following news of his death at about 10 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at the age of 34. In a statement released on August 28, UPPA said it received the news with deep shock and joined the people of Tooro, Parliament and the wider country in mourning a monarch it described as a youthful and visionary leader.

According to the association, King Oyo’s 31-year reign was marked not only by cultural leadership but also by support for youth empowerment, education, health, tourism and environmental conservation. UPPA President Samuel Ibanda Mugabi said the king stood out as a bridge between tradition and modernity and maintained a close relationship with the media. The tribute also framed him as a unifying figure for Tooro and a source of inspiration for younger Ugandans.

The report notes that King Oyo was crowned in 1995 at the age of three, becoming the world’s youngest reigning monarch at the time. Over the years, he became one of Uganda’s best-known cultural leaders. UPPA said it would continue promoting the values associated with his leadership, including unity, development and respect for culture, as the country mourns his passing.
