What the report says

Wazalendo Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (SACCO), which serves members of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, has held a two-day training for branch managers and delegates from the central region on enterprise selection and management. According to Watchdog Uganda, the programme took place at Land Force Headquarters in Bombo and was designed to help participants build financial readiness and sustainable livelihoods during and after military service.

The session focused on how to identify, start and manage income-generating ventures that can support retirement planning. Wazalendo SACCO Vice Chairman Brig Gen Peter Gaetano Omola encouraged participants to look at practical options such as coffee farming, poultry and piggery, and said retirement preparation should begin early. He also urged those attending to apply the lessons in their own units and share the knowledge with other UPDF personnel.

The training included hands-on input from farmers and agricultural experts from Luwero and other parts of Uganda. A coffee specialist, Mr Mumbere Hosea, discussed coffee varieties as well as plantation establishment and management, while participants visited successful agricultural enterprises in Bombo and Luwero to see examples of coffee, poultry and piggery operations.

The event brought together SACCO branch managers, officers, delegates, farmers and agricultural experts. More broadly, the initiative reflects a growing focus among savings groups and military welfare programmes on helping service members prepare for life after active duty through practical business skills and income diversification.
