UPDF retrains new soldiers ahead of operational deployment

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces has begun refresher training for newly passed-out soldiers in Moroto, according to Nile Post. The program is aimed at strengthening military skills and preparing the troops for operational deployment. The course opened on Monday at the UPDF 3 Infantry Division headquarters and involves soldiers from Intake 05 who graduated on July 9, 2026, from Olilim Basic Military Training School. They were drawn from units linked to the 3 Infantry Division.

Brigadier General Michael Walaka Hyeroba, the 3 Infantry Division commander, said the retraining is meant to reinforce discipline and readiness for field duties. He urged the soldiers to follow UPDF rules and regulations, understand their roles within the force and remain focused during the course. The Division Operations and Training Officer, Colonel Santurino Mashereka Tumuranzye, said continued training is necessary to keep troops competent and able to respond to changing security conditions.

The report also notes that senior officers, including the deputy division commander and brigade commanders, attended the opening. In general, militaries often conduct refresher courses after basic training to prepare new recruits for real-world operations, but Nile Post specifically reported this as a UPDF effort in Moroto to sharpen readiness ahead of deployment.
