UPDF Reserve Force commander orders nationwide assessment

Maj Gen Ssemwanga, the commander of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces Reserve Force, has ordered a nationwide assessment of Reserve Force structures in an effort to improve supervision, coordination and operational readiness. According to Nile Post, he said the planned tour will take him across the country to review regional formations and how they work with headquarters.

The announcement was made on Monday at a meeting in Bombo with regional Reserve Force commanders and directors. The gathering reviewed the force’s operational effectiveness and allowed officers to share field experiences and point out areas where they need more support and guidance. Ssemwanga also called on commanders to stay professional, disciplined and prepared, saying teamwork is important for meeting national defence and security needs.

The meeting also touched on retirement planning and related benefits. Brig Gen Julius Biryabarema, who heads pension, gratuity and compensation, briefed officers on procedures for retirement support and urged reservists to keep personal and family records current so eligible personnel and beneficiaries can access entitlements. He said this can include medical and education assistance where applicable.

In addition, participants received information on life assurance and other financial products from Old Mutual Investment Group. The discussions brought together Reserve Force leaders from different parts of the country and reflected broader efforts to strengthen administration as well as operational performance.
