What the report says

Uganda’s military leadership has restated the country’s support for international peacekeeping, with Brig Gen Charity Bainababo of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) saying the effort is being advanced through training, technology and stronger partnerships. The remarks were made at the close of the 17th Women’s Outreach Course and the 12th United Nations Peacekeeping Micro-UAS Remote Pilot Course at the UN Regional Service Centre in Entebbe, according to Watchdog Uganda.

Bainababo said Uganda views peacekeeping as part of a wider duty to promote regional and global security. She also noted that the country is preparing to host the inaugural Conference of Chiefs of Defence Forces, where military leaders are expected to discuss operations other than war. She praised the course participants, drawn from seven missions, African Union operations and 14 member states, for completing training aimed at improving leadership, technical skills and readiness for peace operations.

The article also quoted French Ambassador Virginie Leroy, who reaffirmed France’s backing for UN peacekeeping training and said the partnership supporting the programme has been renewed until 2029. She pointed to growing interest in gender inclusion and new technologies, including remotely piloted aircraft, in modern missions. Representatives of the United Nations Mine Action Service said the micro-unmanned aerial systems course is part of a broader plan to build such capabilities across peacekeeping.

The two courses brought together 21 participants in Entebbe. The development matters because it highlights Uganda’s continuing role in UN-linked training and the wider push to prepare peacekeepers for more technology-driven operations.
