UPDF Crowned Overall Champions Of 18th Inter-Forces Games In Gulu

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) were declared overall winners of the 18th Inter-Forces Games, which took place in Gulu City and brought together four security institutions. Watchdog Uganda reported that the UPDF finished with three gold medals, ahead of the Uganda Police Force, which placed second with two gold medals, and the Uganda Prisons Service, which came third with one gold medal. The Uganda Wildlife Authority received a fair play award after ending the competition without a gold medal.

The games featured participants from the UPDF, Uganda Police Force, Uganda Prisons Service and Uganda Wildlife Authority competing in eight disciplines, including football, netball, volleyball, athletics, taekwondo, handball, darts and range shooting. Both men and women took part, and the event was held under the theme of building cooperation through sport.

At the closing ceremony at St Joseph’s College Layibi, Minister of State for Defence and Veteran Affairs Grace Akifeza Ngabirano praised the teams for discipline, teamwork and healthy competition. She said the games helped demonstrate talent and professionalism within the security services. Deputy Commander Land Forces Felix Busizoori, speaking for the Chief of Defence Forces, said the tournament was meant to strengthen unity and partnership among the institutions.

Organising committee chair Richard Karemire said 1,017 people participated in the championship and thanked leaders, coaches, referees and local hosts in Gulu for supporting the event. Watchdog Uganda also reported that the Uganda Prisons Service will host the 19th edition of the games.
