UPDF 3 Division Commander Tips Platoon Commanders On Leadership And Discipline

What the report says
Brig Gen Michael Walaka Hyeroba, the commander of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces 3 Infantry Division, has called on officers taking part in the Platoon Commanders Course Intake 18/26 to prioritize discipline, stay physically fit and lead by example. According to Watchdog Uganda, he delivered the message while evaluating the trainees during a field exercise known as Exercise Storm Karamoja.
The article says Hyeroba told the officers that platoon leadership is tested in difficult conditions, when soldiers are tired, hungry or under fire. His remarks were made during a training assessment intended to prepare junior officers for command responsibilities in demanding operational settings.
The division’s Operations and Training Officer and exercise director, Col Santurino Mashereka Tumuranzye, said the exercise was designed to measure combat readiness and decision-making under pressure. Col Mike Katongole Ssempija, speaking for Joint Staff Training and Doctrine, also praised the instructors and trainees and emphasized the value of ongoing professional development in the force.
Watchdog Uganda reported that the course is meant to equip junior officers with the skills needed to lead platoons effectively in pacification and disarmament operations in Karamoja and along the Uganda-Kenya border. The piece places the training in the wider context of UPDF efforts to strengthen leadership and preparedness in security operations in the region.
