UPC Warns Against Money Politics Ahead of LC1 Elections

Nile Post reported that Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) President Jimmy Akena has cautioned voters against accepting money or other inducements as the country prepares for LC1 elections. Speaking at the party’s headquarters in Kampala, Akena urged citizens to take part in the grassroots polls and to assess candidates on integrity, competence, character and commitment to serving their communities.

According to the report, Akena said the elections give Ugandans a chance to influence leadership at the community level and demand accountability from local leaders. He argued that voting decisions should not be shaped by financial pressure, but by whether candidates can contribute to improving the country and responding to local needs.

The UPC leader said the party has presented candidates across Uganda and expressed confidence that they can serve residents regardless of political affiliation. He also told voters to view public office as a duty to serve all citizens, not as a platform for narrow political interests. Nile Post reported that Akena acknowledged difficulties faced by candidates, including limited resources and political pressure, while encouraging citizens to remain committed to exercising their democratic rights.

The LC1 elections are important because Local Council I leaders are the first tier of elected leadership in villages and neighbourhoods, often handling community concerns and linking residents to higher levels of government. The contests are also expected to draw interest from political parties and independents as parties work to strengthen grassroots structures ahead of Uganda’s 2026 electoral cycle.
