Unknown assailants raid Sembabule church, injure worshippers during overnight prayers

Nile Post reported that unidentified attackers raided Messiah God Reverence Church in Lwendayi Village, Sembabule Town Council, during overnight prayers on Friday night, leaving several worshippers injured and robbed. The incident reportedly happened at about 11pm in Sembabule District, where congregants at the Pentecostal church were holding a prayer service.

According to the report, eyewitnesses said the assailants arrived in two vehicles locally known as “drones” and entered the church wearing dark clothing, with some covering their faces. They allegedly assaulted worshippers with sticks, damaged electrical wiring and lighting, tried to force entry into sections of the building using axes, and took cash, mobile phones and other valuables. Victims described injuries including cuts and bruises, while a church leader who was preaching said he was attacked after one assailant attempted to restrain him.

Sembabule Town Council Chairperson Pastor Jackson Mulungi condemned the raid and said it had increased fear among residents. He said authorities were waiting for police findings and did not rule out possible lines of inquiry, including whether religious disputes could be relevant.

Greater Masaka Regional Police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye confirmed that police had opened investigations and appealed to the public for information that could help identify the suspects. Nile Post said no arrests had been made by press time, and police were still working to establish the motive and those responsible. The attack has prompted calls from residents for stronger protection at places of worship.
